Coercive Style – Demands or force someone to do something.Advantages: This style can be effective in a disaster scenario such as handling tornadoes or hurricanes, or when dealing with a problem employee who only complies by the act of coercion.Disadvantages/Drawbacks: This style hurts and can destroys an employee’s confidence as well. 2. Authoritative style – This style takes “I’ll lead and you follow me” approach. As a leader you are setting the goal and letting your employees learn as well as identify the best way to achieve the goal. Advantages: This style is very effective if your are a leader that is highly trained at the set position to teach your employees the ropes of the job.This style works well if the leader is an expert. Disadvantages/Drawbacks: It is almost as if employees are being babied along the way. They are being taught step by step how to achieve the goal with their leader and aren’t learning anything for themselves. 3. Affiliative Style – This is a “people’s first” style, this leading style focuses solely on the emotional bonds that can be brought into the business.Advanatges: Very effective in a team building stage, because employees gain comforbility and attachment to one another.Disadvantages/Drawbacks: Leader is so focused on bonds, that the employees don’t learn the most important things of the job and business. 4. Democratic style – This style gives employees a voice and level of importance. It takes the “What do you think?” approach.Advantages: This style can build employees confidence and also gives leaders an idea of which employees are able to take on more importnant responsibility.Disadvantages/Drawbacks: Sometimes employees do’t have a take on anything, whether it’s because they don’t care enough to share or the don’t know. A leader with this style wouldn’t work for an employee who needs a leader telling them their objectives for the day or how to handle a certain situation. 5. Pacesetting style – Performance standards are set very high for leaders with this mangaging style. Leaders with this style expects employees to perform up to their desired standard right away. There is no coaching or leading the way for leaders with this styles.Advantages: This style is very effective for employees who are self motivated, because they want to achieve set goals as quick as possible and show leaders they have what it takes.Disadvantages/Drawbacks: For employees who aren’t self motivated, this becomes overwhelming to them. They feel as if they can’t do it or that their performances aen’t enough to satisfy their leader. 6.Coaching style – This style is simply a helping style. This styles helps employees grow to become better at their position. Advantages: It is good for starting a business such as a physical therapist practice. You can teach your employees the basics and help them along the way to become better at their position.Disadvantages: For employees who are more experienced it slow their pace down. Leaders feel they are helping while that employee feels they are in the way are consistently standing over their shoulders.
