For the last decade or so, consumers have been criticizing bottled water companies for their harmful impact on the planet as well as their unsustainable sources. With over 50 billion bottles of water being consumed annually, companies that produce these products must raise their standards in order to prevent further environmental damage.
However, one company seems to be doing it right. Waiakea Water takes ethical and environmentally-friendly initiatives while managing to be completely sustainable. Plus, the water has a unusually high level of nutrients.
Waiakea Water was launched in 2012 by Ryan Emmons who was only 22 years old at the time. Emmons had frequently vacationed in Hawaii with his family and was always stricken by the taste of the water located in the Waiakea Springs. The water gets its unique taste from the minerals and nutrients it picks up as it travels down thousands of feet of the active Mauna Loa volcano.
The water contains silica, a mineral that has been linked to improved cognitive brain function and digestive function. The water also has sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium which are essential electrolytes that keep the body hydrated.
Because of high levels of rainfall, Waiakea water is replenished regularly. Therefore, the brand takes its water from a source that is completely sustainable. Learn more about Waiakea Water: http://www.elle.com/beauty/health-fitness/a32285/alkaline-water-health-benefits-claims/
Emmons decided to bottle the water using methods that were friendly to the environment. Instead of using plastic bottles, he uses bottles that are made of completely recycled materials so that they don’t clog landfills.
According to Global News Wire, the manufacturing process uses a significantly lower amount of energy than that of other bottled beverage companies. As a result, Waiakea Water is the first bottled beverage company to be certified carbon neutral.
In an effort to give back, Emmons launched a unique charitable campaign that takes an ethical initiative. Along with Pump Aid, the charitable organization known for providing clean water to underprivileged regions around the world, the company is making a difference on a global scale. For every liter of Waiakea Water purchased, the company gives 650 liters of fresh drinking water to an impoverished part of the world.
Because of Emmons’ commitment to social responsibility, Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water continues to thrive. Now valued at over $10 million, the company is doing so well that Emmons is opening a new manufacturing facility in Hawaii.
